Painting with a knife

I ran across an article in International Artist magazine (June-July edition page 78) about painting with palette knives. I was intersted in the fact that the artist was doing landscapes using only a knife and they had an exciting look about them. I've played with knife painting from time to time ususally in abstract projects to develop texture in part of the painting. This artist was doing the entire painting with knives, never wetting a brush. The idea that I could do a painting without having to clean a brush appealled to my lazy nature. This old barn is my first attempt. It was fun and I enjoyed just wipping the knive with a paper towel each time I wanted to change colors. It didn't take long to discover there are all sorts of ways to load the paint on the knife and then to get the desired affect on the canvas. This painting is 12x24 and I used 3 knives (large medium and small).

This is a marvelous effort, Bill... hard to believe its your first with palette knives.
I have only tried once ... enjoyed it but found it rather laborious. Seeing yours makes me think that maybe I should try it again.
Hope to see more of these from you!!
Yay. So nice to find another palette knife painter. Love the barn; I would enjoy seeing more of your technique, so paint away!
:-)
A few samples are on my blog, if you would like to see some landscapes and seascapes. They are really fun to paint, and fast when studio time is precious.
I, too, like the speedy clean-up!
Its amazing for me that painting is possible with knife! i never ever head about it, perhaps therefor because am not from this field, however its awesome painting and wonderful for me.
I can't believe that it is possible with knife, i never heard about it that you can draw anything with knife, however it is brilliant work.
